Stormy Weather to Impact Northern California – Rain, Wind & Snow Expected

More wet weather is on the way for Northern California, beginning Monday evening.

A steady downpour is expected to resume after sunset, leading into a stormy Tuesday filled with rain, strong winds, and heavy snow at higher elevations.

The KCRA 3 Weather Team has designated Monday evening as an Impact Day due to the anticipated adverse effects of the incoming weather system on travel and outdoor activities.

Tuesday Brings Heavy Rain, Wind & Snow

Tuesday morning is set to be wet and breezy across the Valley and Foothills. A Flood Watch remains in effect through Tuesday evening, although no significant river, stream, or creek flooding is expected. However, localized flooding and water accumulation on poorly draining roads could be an issue.

Due to the all-day rain, strong winds, and substantial high-elevation snowfall, Tuesday has been declared an Alert Day.

Sierra Travel Advisory:
If travel to the Sierra is not essential, it is best to avoid the area on Tuesday, as intense snowfall above 6,000 feet will make driving hazardous.

Expected Wind Gusts

• Valley: Winds expected to reach 40-45 mph, particularly east of the Valley and into the lower Foothills, south of Interstate 80.
• Potential Hazards: Strong gusts could result in isolated tree damage and power outages.

Snowfall & Road Conditions in the Sierra

• Snow begins falling above 6,000 feet Monday night and will accumulate quickly.
• Gusty winds could significantly disrupt Sierra travel.
• Donner Summit may receive 12-18 inches of snow by Tuesday evening.
• Chain controls could remain in place through Wednesday.

• Valley: 1.5-2 inches of rain
• Foothills: 2-4 inches of rain
• Sierra (above 7,000 feet): 1-2 feet of snow

Wednesday & Another Storm on Thursday

While a few lingering showers may persist into early Wednesday, the Valley and Foothills are expected to see mostly dry conditions for the rest of the day.

A new storm system is forecasted to arrive Thursday, bringing another round of rain and snow. This system appears to be less intense, with lower rainfall totals in the Valley. However, snow levels could drop to 4,000 feet, increasing winter travel concerns.
