Schools in Whatcom County and Seattle Area Affected by Snow and Ice Closures

As Monday morning unfolds, many schools across the Puget Sound region are experiencing delays or closures due to snowfall and icy conditions.
School Closures in Whatcom County
Several public schools in Whatcom County, including those in Bellingham, Ferndale, and Lynden, are completely closed as frigid air from Canada pushed temperatures down to the low teens. Whatcom Community College has also shut down its campus, although online classes will proceed as scheduled. Additionally, Western Washington University will remain closed until 10 a.m.
Delayed Start for Schools in Western Washington
Many school districts across Western Washington have announced delayed openings, including those in Auburn, Bellevue, Enumclaw, Everett, Highline, Issaquah, Kent, Lake Washington, Mercer Island, Muckleshoot, Northshore, Renton, Riverview, Shoreline, Snoqualmie Valley, Tukwila, and Vashon.
In Pierce County, several school districts have also adjusted their schedules:
- Tacoma, Fife, and Bethel districts will open two hours later than usual.
- Puyallup School District will have a one-hour delay.
Additionally, morning activities across the region have been canceled, though most schools anticipate resuming normal schedules later in the day.
Colleges and Universities Announce Delays
Several higher education institutions have also adjusted their schedules:
- Bellevue College, Green River College, Highline College, Pacific Lutheran University, Pierce College, Renton Technical College, and the University of Washington’s Tacoma campus will open later than usual.
Seattle Public Schools Maintain Regular Schedule
Despite initial snowfall in the early hours, Seattle Public Schools announced around 6 a.m. that classes will proceed at their normal start time. Compared to other parts of Western Washington, Seattle experienced less snow and milder temperatures, allowing schools to operate without disruption.
